This impression where confirmed when I was working with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugdesigntech.com\/staff\/cedric-merlot\" target=\"_blank\">Cedric Merlot<\/a> on building a predictive systems biology method for predicting systemic drug effect based on multiple protein interaction. In fact, as a side-result our method suggested a strong linkage between platelets and\u00a0serotonin\u00a0and also pointed that it might be heavily with the rest of the immune response system.<\/p>\n<p>While reading a paper on a completely unrelated subject I fall on a syndrome that looks like single-protein caused, but that links eczema and low platelet count. Now, that gets really interesting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Wiskott\u2013Aldrich syndrome<\/b>\u00a0(WAS) is a rare\u00a0<a title=\"Sex-linked\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sex-linked\">X-linked<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Recessive gene\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recessive_gene\">recessive<\/a>\u00a0disease characterized by\u00a0<a title=\"Eczema\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eczema\">eczema<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Thrombocytopenia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thrombocytopenia\">thrombocytopenia<\/a>\u00a0(low\u00a0<a title=\"Platelet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platelet\">platelet<\/a>count),\u00a0<a title=\"Immune deficiency\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Immune_deficiency\">immune deficiency<\/a>, and bloody diarrhea (secondary to the thrombocytopenia)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since my master course on advanced immunology by Nicole Harris at EPFL I had an impression that platelets have been playing an important role in the immune response but were still a completely under-explored domain.
